Dennis Wheatley - The Island where time stands still

It took some time until a new post. Sorry readers!

Bought this one in a used book store, without knowing the author. A little research showed that this one is quite interesting.

During WWII, the author Dennis Wheatley was hired by Winston Churchill to be a part of a highly confidential group of strategists. He was one of the only civilians to be recruited, on the strength that he had shown a flair for deception and cover stories in his novels, particularly through his incarnation of Gregory Sallust - widely regarded as the inspiration for Ian Fleming's James Bond.

And this story is the ninth one in a series of 11 novels. Its a Arrow Book from 1964. Originally, it was first published in the year 1954.

On a pleasure cruise on the South Seas, Sir Pellinore Gwaine-Cust's yacht hits a coral reef and sinks in minutes. Only one survivor is washed to the safety of the shore: Gregory Sallust.

But this is no ordinary Pacific island. When Gregory regains consciousness he finds himself among a Chinese community, ruled by descendents of the ancient Imperial House. Within days the throne becomes vacant, and Gregory joins an expedition to find the true heir - a hazardous search that takes him to San Francisco, and deep into the forbidden heart of China itself.

Interesting article from "The Yellowed Pages". I missed the first issues, but I was a regular reader of this great magazine. Unfortunately, it changed in its last years to a movie-magazine (and not a very good one... - compared to EMPIRE or TOTAL FILM) and the comic-part was more and more boring. The internet was there with more actual comic news and so I stopped buying it one day. And in 2011, the magazine was cancelled.

Dieses K.H. Scheer-Abenteuer wurde nie als Taschenbuch veröffentlicht. Doch auch das Cover hat mich sehr angesprochen.

Ich stolperte vor Jahren in einem Buch über SF-Literatur darüber. In einem Comic- und SF-Antiquariat wurde ich schliesslich fündig, dazu waren die beiden Hefte (eine Kuriosität am Rande - 2 Hefte - Teil 1 + 2, aber nur eine Nummer, die 260) noch in einem sehr guten Zustand.

Schön.

Alte Covers und ein neues Jahr

Kürzlich hab ich ein paar alte Romanhefte bei Ebay ersteigert.....

Eines war ein altes Terra-Extra-Heft aus dem Jahre 1966. Das Cover wurde vom Zeichner Johnny Bruck in der Atlan-Heftroman-Serie "recycled".

Ein zweites sprach mich wegen dem tollen Covers und dem wunderbaren, Space-Operamässigen Titel an: "Die Kaiserin der Galaxis"



Es ist ein altes TERRA-Heft aus dem Jahr 1967, ebenfalls vom Moewig-Verlag. Auch hier wurde es von Johnny Bruck nochmals etwas überarbeitet und wieder verwendet, diesmal für die Perry Rhodan-Serie. (PR 718)

Für mich haben diese Hefte einen besonderen Reiz. Die Cover sind schön gezeichnet, und die Stories sind meist Space Operas reinsten Wassers. Dazu kommt das Alter - sie sind über 40 Jahre alt und gingen durch viele Hände. Wie vielen Leuten haben diese Hefte die Stunden verkürzt?

Für mich ist es nicht unbedingt wichtig, dass das Heft makellos und neuwertig ist. Man kann ruhig sehen, wie alt es ist. Ein altes Buch, Magazin oder Romanheft ist wie eine Botschaft aus längst vergangener Zeit.

Die bunten Cover künden von Phantasien und Ideen, die zu Zeiten entstanden, als man noch optimistisch in die Zukunft schaute, die Mondlandung noch bevorstand und alles ein bisschen weniger komplex und hektisch war.

Ich wünsche allen noch schöne Festtage, und ein gutes neues Jahr! Nutzt den Moment und geniesst die Zeit, setzt Euch hin, lest ein Buch, geniesst einen Tee dazu, und lasst die Welt draussen einfach mal draussen.
